Your BGC Masterclass
on Regifting
This Reddit post thread is a treasure trove of insight on the topic of regifting.
To save you the time of combing through the hundreds of comments, I’ve distilled what I found to be the very best insights into a digestible and actionable gameplan. Enjoy!
Regifting Rule #1: Don’t ever let something you regifted cross paths with the original gift-giver!
Just don’t forget who originally gave it to you. I did that with a wedding gift.🤦🏻♀️ Recieved 4 identical silver duck shaped trivets from three different people. Who even needs one of those? (I did keep one.) When a cousin got married a few years later, I accidentally gave him and his wife one of them. Later, I realized that they had given me two of them. So, it was worse—I gave them less than they gave me!
BGC Regifting Playbook:
Identify a “hiding place” in your household to store items you intend to regift
Upon receiving an item, determine it’s regiftability potential
If the item is regiftable, before placing it into your hiding place, put a sticky note on it that lists who gave it to you and appropriate potential regift recipients
Allow item you intend to regift to properly “age”. To be wise, don’t immediately regift something.
Seek appropriate regifting opportunities (your regift recipient will enjoy the gift AND the regift won’t cross paths with original gift-giver)
I have a bin in a closet with regiftables by person, where I put a sticky note with the person who I plan to give it to, and another bin that’s for generic regiftables. I put a note on those saying who gave it to me so I don’t give it back to them.
Possible Regifting Opportunities:
Senior centers (as bingo prizes)
Planned regift gift exchanges/white elephants
Silent auctions (combine related items in a basket)
Last-minute gifting occasions (see “always-on-hand" gifts)
Just-because gifting occasions (lower scrutiny/expectations)
Donation centers/food pantry (see The “Boxing Day Giving" Gift)
Gifting occasions outside of the social circle of the original gift-giver
My roller derby team did a re-gift white elephant exchange at our Christmas party. We all knew going into it that the point was to re-gift so no one's feelings were hurt and no one was expecting anything too impressive. By the end of it everyone had something they either really liked or could at least make use of.
Other Regifitng Insights:
Commonly regifted items: beauty, self care, and home decor products
Generic items are easier to regift. It's likely not wise to regift personalized gifts or ones with high sentimental value.
Save yourself embarrassment - In case you’re asked, have an idea of what store an item you regift might have come from. When possible, save gift receipts!
I can't tell you how much fancy products mean to a struggling mom.

Subscribers putting BGC
gift ideas into action
Have you been inspired by a gift idea shared in the BGC newsletter? It would be the highlight of my week to hear from you about it! Here’s who made my week:
In the edition Turning a last-minute gift into a tradition they’ll love, the following comment was shared about why this subscriber prefers experiential IOU gifts:
An IOU for time with the gift giver after the occasion makes me feel like the gift giver really cares about me. They aren’t just giving a gift to fulfill an obligation. I feel special and anticipate the event as much as the original occasion.
