Greetings Gift-Givers!

Hi gift-givers! In the aftermath of the holidays, are you feeling like your home has turned into an obstacle course of unwrapped gifts and party platters? Today’s gift is about decluttering your home from holiday excess in a way that benefits those who didn’t have as bountiful of a season.

Want to send a thank you message to someone for a holiday gift? Check out Heidi Bender’s work at Tons of Thanks - Writing Thank You Messages for Christmas Gifts with 21 Examples

One tip Heidi shared with me that I thought was golden was to mention the gift that was received in the your thank you messages/notes. This will make them feel more personal and meaningful. A generic "thank you for the gift" may disappoint them.

Gift idea time! Here’s a story of a
great gift to spark your creativity

The “Boxing Day Giving" Gift:

On the day after Christmas, our home is cluttered with unwrapped gifts. Our fridge, full of leftovers, barely closes and we always seem to have extra tins of Christmas cookies that we may never get to. This year, I stumbled upon the Boxing Day tradition of sharing your holiday surplus with the less fortunate. We intend to gather up all the unwanted gifts, excess food, and miscellaneous holiday clutter and came up with a plan for donating them.

Why this gift is great

  • Decluttering is healthy

  • Generosity makes us happier (Says who? Says science)

  • Opportunity to instill generosity in others (e.g. your children)

Brainstorming your version of this gift

Excess holiday food items can be donated to local food banks, senior living facilities, places of worship, medical professionals who can take them into work, or someone having a New Years party.

  • Non-perishable food

  • Holiday sweets and treats

Items you may have upgraded during the holidays can be donated to donation centers like Goodwill or others in need in your personal network.

  • Home decorations

  • Exercise equipment

  • Electronics & gadgets

  • Furniture & Home Goods

  • Appliances & kitchenware

  • Clothing (e.g. pink bunny suit)

Unwanted gifts you may have received can also be donated to donation centers like Goodwill or others in need in your personal network.

  • Clothing

  • Beauty products

  • Gift cards to places you’ll never shop

  • Children toys (like they need more, right?)

Extra free time (if you have any) can be used to donate your time and talent to loved ones and strangers.

  • Visit someone who likely had a lonely holiday
