Gift idea time! Here’s a story of a
great gift to spark your creativity
The “IOU Quality Time (Q.T.)" Gift:
One of my favorite events of the year is in the spring when I finally get to replant my garden. It is my Super Bowl. One year, as a Christmas gift, instead of giving me more garden supplies and decorations (which I love but have a lot of), my best friend simply gave me a thoughtful card that included an IOU to join me that upcoming spring in replanting my garden. We penciled in a couple of tentative days, and eventually, one of them proved to have the perfect weather. We spent the day together gardening and enjoying each other’s company. Her IOU Christmas gift has become an annual tradition and it continues to be one of my favorite presents.
Why this gift is great
Traditions remove guesswork from future gifts
Stands out because it doesn’t compete for gift attention
Last-minute gift potential…but doesn’t feel last-minute
Great for those whose Hugsi Gift Language is Time Together
The gift of quality time is great for those who “have everything”
Prioritizes offering the gift-recipient value over other priorities (e.g. a gift-giver’s anxiety about not giving a gift on the actual gifting occasion)
Brainstorming your version of this gift
Gift-recipients are happier receiving experiential gifts than material gifts (Goodman & Lim, 2014)
Scheduling a IOU Q.T. gift:
It’s best to pre-schedule this gift before giving it
Ideally, deliver on an IOU Q.T. gift before the next gift occasion for them
The IOU Q.T. Gift is similar to the 🎁 “You Choose Q.T. IOU” Gift, but it doesn’t put the burden on the gift-recipient to select the event.
Potential upcoming IOU Q.T. experiences to consider:
Upcoming life events (e.g. spring gardening)
Entertainment events (concerts, sports, etc.)
Experiences on their upcoming trips (e.g. like this gift from a mom to her daughter)

Who on your gift list “has everything”? ___

Have you been inspired by a gift idea shared in the BGC newsletter? It would be the highlight of my week to hear from you about it! Here’s who made my week:
Inspired by 🎁 The free soundtrack of their life:
I love this idea and have instigated it for my friend’s 50th birthday. It’s on Christmas Day which usually limits the attendees to potential in-person events. :-/
