Turning words into sentimental art

Your 1-minute-a-week shortcut to
always having awesome gift ideas well in advance.

My attempt to make you smile
before getting to today’s gift ideas

Hi gift-givers! This newsletter is the take-a-penny, leave-a-penny tray that gift-givers can’t get enough of.

A great deal, right?

One-ish more thing(s)
before today’s gift ideas

Calling all BGC subscribers! This newsletter community was created with the assumption that, if enough subscribers submit their own gift stories, this could be a gift inspiration resource unlike any other. About 3-4 months ago, we had a well-stocked inventory of subscriber-submitted stories and I felt like we were humming along at the full realization of my original vision. Over the last few months, although, submissions of subscriber-submitted stories have dwindled.

To ensure you, the subscribers, are all sitting pretty this upcoming gift-giving season with the best collection of gifts you’ve ever given, we want to be cruising on a full tank again.

Please take the opportunity to contribute to the special thing we have going here by replying to this email with stories of the best gifts you have ever received or given! Thanks!

This email doesn’t cost you any money to always have great gift ideas well in advance…but you could pay me back in stories!

Gift idea time! Here’s a story of a
great gift to spark your creativity

The “word cloud" Gift:

I do a fun group gift where I ask friends and family to submit 3 words and/or phrases that describe the birthday girl (I do this for milestone b-days). Then I compile all the results in excel and "rank" them based on how many people said that word. I then submit my results to an amazing artist on Etsy who creates custom subway art with the results - making the words that were the most repeated more prominent [also known as a word cloud]. I often combine words to make fun phrases with alliteration. It’s a low-cost and super sentimental gift.

Why this gift is great

Brainstorming your version of this gift

This doesn’t have to be a group gift. You could word cloud your texts or emails with someone.

You could do the analysis manually like Julie does (much respect), or you could use this free online word cloud generator I found to save you time - www.wordclouds.com

  • Here’s a video tutorial on how to use this tool

  • You copy and paste words, sentences, paragraphs

  • You choose the shape or the cloud, colors, font, size, etc.

  • Once you download your free word cloud image, you can save it as a jpeg and have it printed to your preferred preferences

🚨Warning! Whenever gifting artwork or home decor, consider your recipient’s style preferences and the space needed for them to display your gift.

Consider smaller dimensions – This gift in a 5”x7” frame can easily deliver the same value as the same gift in much larger (aka more challenging to accommodate) dimensions.

BGC gift ideas
in action

Have you been inspired by a gift idea shared in the BGC newsletter? It would be the highlight of my week to hear from you about it! Here’s who made my week:

In 🎁Cherish the oops moments I asked if anyone had mishap gift stories to share. Michelle from Connecticut didn’t disappoint!

My youngest son gave my son a mishap Christmas gift that was sensational! We had gone on a National Parks trip in Utah. My middle son slipped climbing, and fell into a cactus. Luckily, he was ok, but his 2 brothers razzed him mercilessly, including taking a few photos as he was pulling spines off his body.

One of those photos was sent to a company that reproduces photos to look like paintings. A matted fancy frame was added, and then the gift giver added a clever description of the “painting” like you would see in a museum, talking about the hidden meaning and the emotions the “piece” was meant to evoke or represent. It was hilarious! The gift recipient loved it and we all agreed it was the best gift under the tree!
