This is Better Gift Coach, where your graduating class has reconvened to vote for you to be most likely to give the best gifts. In your acceptance speech, please feel free to thank your gift coachā¦and encourage everyone to subscribe.
Todayās topic is graduation gifts, but before we get to thatā¦
I have something supercalifragilisticexpialidocious that a subscriber shared with me, and with your help, Iād like us to make it even better.
Reply with keepsake ideas for Megan:
A BGC subscriber, Megan, emailed me the following:
āI was inspired by the "Hidden Notes" gift idea. I wrote 10 love notes to my boyfriend, numbered them, and hid them around our apartment. He found the last note the day before we left for a vacation. He was very excited to find note #10. Then, while on vacation, I hid note #11 in our hotel room. It said "Will you marry me?" on it. He turned around after reading it and I had an engagement ring waiting for him. We joke that he got a prize for finding all of the notes. Thank you so much for helping me make this proposal an epic, week-long adventure!ā
Wow! After congratulating Megan, thanking them for sharing this story with me, and suggesting saving their wedding menu for a future gift, I learned that they plan to elope somewhere abroad later this year. Megan does like the idea of intentionally saving keepsakes from their trip for future gifts, although, and suggested saving their airline tickets or the menu from the post-ceremony restaurant (both great ideas).
BGC community ā please reply to this email with more keepsake ideas from Meganās memorable trip. Life advice on how to make the most out of a first year of marriage is also welcomed! Really, anything to help Megan is fair game.

THE GIFT STORY
šTHE GIFT:
The āadulthood in-a-box graduation" Gift
When my niece went off to college in 2020 my first thought was āWhat is something I really could have used in college, but didnāt pack myself?ā Ah-ha! A first aid kit! Sadly, she contracted COVID within her first month, however she reported back that she was grateful to have cold medicine and pain medicine on hand during her quarantine period.
I gifted a fully stocked tool box to a colleagueās son when he graduated high school. His mother later told me the tools helped her son make friends with others in the dorm because he was the only one with tools.

š® WHY THIS GIFT IS GREAT:
Useful
Turnkey gift
Often unwisely overlooked
Something can give alongside money
MAKE THIS GIFT YOUR OWN
š”TIPS FOR YOUR GIFT:
Money is the most popular grad gift:
According to the National Retail Federation, in 2022 83% of people plan to give cash and/or gift cards for their graduation gifts.
I couldnāt dig up stats on what gifts graduates want, but Iām fairly confident that grads also prefer cash/check/venmo and/or gift cards (and hereās how to make gift cards fun).
BGC picks for gifts alternatives to giving money or to only giving money:
Starter/Dorm Kits:
Other:
Open when letters (incoming college students or entering adulthood)
Subscription boxes (out-of-the-box or make-your-own) ā Continually keeps gift-giver and recipient connected

P.P.S. Thanks to your encouragement in last weekās poll, my April Fools Day prank on my wife went swimmingly. I programmed her iPhone to replace the word āokā with āheyyy macarenaā. Hereās a screenshot from one of her text convos with a friend:

FYI - my wife couldnāt stop laughing

After learning about the iPhone text replacement prank from š April Fools pranks that are giftsā¦
I almost spit my tea out for the iPhone settings. My husband NEVER leaves his iPad at home, until today! He's in a band and the lead singer's name is George. They have text threads going on all the time. I changed George to Gorgeous :)
