🎁 April Fools pranks that are gifts

This is Better Gift Coach, where we firmly believe that pulling a good-natured April Fools Day prank on someone that makes them laugh can be a gift in itself (for both of you).

On that note, we also want to remind you that you can recycle a prank and turn it into a future birthday, anniversary, or holiday gift!

Thank you in advance to anyone who votes below to help me decide how to prank my wife on April Fool’s Day!

THE GIFT STORY

🎁THE GIFT:

The “Pranks are gifts" Gift

I’ve been planning an April Fools joke to play on Rob for MONTHS!! I got him good! When he came inside he kept asking, “What IS all that?!?” I had to explain that it was 6 months of saved [Amazon] boxes.

💡TIPS FOR YOUR GIFT:

A prank is only a gift for the prankee if they enjoy it too!

Don’t limit pranks as gifts to just April Fool’s Day – prank gifts can liven up birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc.

Recycle pranks for future gifts

 Recycle pranks for future gifts:

  • If possible, save (or recreate) mementos from your pranks to give as future gifts

  • For example, a good possible follow-up gift to the Amazon box prank might be these Amazon box fridge magnets

BGC top picks for good-natured prank ideas:

Most popular April Fool’s pranks involve food (e.g. switching salt & sugar, wrapping veggies in candy wrappers, etc.) or beauty supplies (e.g. switching hand soap with cooking oil). Those are all classics and present souvenir opportunities for future gifts.

Here are a couple pranks that I thought were more original:

  • iPhone keyboard shortcut – it only takes a few steps to program an iPhone to auto-populate a replacement word for commonly used words (e.g. “Yippee-Ki-Yay” every time they type the word “yes”). Just get their unlocked phone and head to Settings > Keyboard > Text Replacement. You’re welcome.

  • Build up to nothing – In the days/weeks leading up to April 1st, tell someone that you have the best April Fools Day prank to pull on them. Then when the day comes…do nothing. They’ll be walking on eggshells all day.

P.S. Thanks to the folks who took me up on my offer to help them brainstorm a gift idea. For example, one of you reached out for gift ideas for graduating resident physicians. Another reached out for gift ideas for their new tween granddaughter who is the daughter of their son’s wife. If anyone else could use some gift ideas for similar scenarios…please let me know.

One thing I've started doing for long-distance friends is tucking some money into my condolence note and saying, please spend this on something that comforts you. A family friend did this for my family after we lost my beloved aunt, and it made me feel really cared-for. There are so many expenses after a major loss, and it can feel wrong and impossible to spend money on your own self, so getting permission to spend the money on some stupid, trashy comfort food for myself meant a lot. - J

Getting permission to treat yourself can make all the difference…

I lost my mom recently. I am usually the one helping others and when my friend suggested a meal train, I first said no. She pushed a little and I’ve never been more grateful for anything. To not have to think about meals was a massive gift. She also set up a system so the person bringing the next night’s dinner would take the dishes from the last night and return them. This was immensely helpful. Somehow being cared for in this way not only fed us, but made us feel mothered and so loved by the people we still had with us on earth. - Lynanne

The system for used dishes pickup takes this gift from good to great.
